Prioritization Workshop at Fortune 500 Insurance Company
Overview
Fortune 500 Insurance Company needed to prioritize the UX work within the business areas portfolio. With four different verticals falling under the portfolio, this created some challenges with limited UX resourcing. I set up and conducted a prioritization workshop with the Engineer Directors and Chief Information Officer. This was a monetary prioritization workshop. The goal was to create a UX roadmap for work and identify opportunities to align more UX resources to the portfolio and verticals.

UX Process
When entering into this client space, where UX research did not have a strong presence, I set up one-on-one conversations with each vertical Engineering Director, Project Manager, and Chief Information Officer to understand the landscape of the products in development and on the roadmap. During this discovery phase, it came to light that there was a significant amount of product work that would benefit from UX research and design. One of the goals of this business unit was to create a unified experience for the end user.
Being the only UX resource in this space at this time, I set up and conducted a prioritization workshop with the Engineer Directors and Chief Information Officer. This was a monetary prioritization workshop in which each director had $100 to place across the products in their space. I walked them through several prompts before they dispersed their money. I also create t-shirt sizing of the UX work to be completed for each product for context purposes. After the workshop, I then analyzed the information to create a roadmap based on each vertical priority.
Once that was complete, I condensed all of the vertical products into one roadmap. I identified the top product for each vertical and pulled those into a separate roadmap to create the workstream for UX. Once that was complete, I scheduled a one-on-one workshop with the Chief Information Officer to prioritize my time. I had them walk through a similar monetary prioritization of work activity. This was then aligned with the suggested UX roadmap of work from the previous exercise with the Engineering Directors.

Outcome
Working with the UX Director at the client, I shared that more UX resources were needed within this business unit. They worked with the Chief Information Officer to determine budgetary constraints and possible internal resources that could move into this space. They ultimately brought in one full-time senior UX designer, and an associate designer from within the client. They also brought on an offshore resource from my organization. I then set forth a plan for project alignment with the UX Manager and Chief Information Officer.
