Intranet Engagement for Energy Company
Overview
The Energy Company released the need to update its internal intranet to make it more user-friendly for its employees. We conducted user research to understand user needs for improving the intranet. This was done through the design thinking process and applying appropriate methodologies throughout the research process.
Problem Statement
Internal users cannot find important and relevant information within the intranet of the Energy Company causing confusion and delays in obtaining the information the end user needs.
UX Process
As the Lead UX Designer for this project, I worked to understand the needs of stakeholders and end users. This was done by conducting user research to understand user needs for improving the intranet for this energy company. I conducted 32 interviews, both stakeholder and observational interviews, gathered notes, and broke down the data from interviews by affinity mapping the findings. After affinity mapping the findings from interviews, I identified four personas. I iterated on the personas to create three high-fidelity personas for delivery.
One of the requirements for the project was to establish a baseline for measurement. This was done by compiling, sending, and analyzing an established SUS Survey. I conducted Timed Tests during observational interviews to understand the amount of time it took users to find specific information. I also asked some Perceived Difficulty Questions to share findings with the client. The plan was to then send another SUS Survey at six and twelve months post-MVP release.
I established the information architecture of the site by performing a card-sorting exercise, analyzing the data, and then creating a site map. I created eight low-fidelity wireframes of four pages on the new intranet based on user research and did one-click testing with users to validate the design. Seven high-fidelity wireframes were then iterated on for the client and handed off to the developer. I then facilitated a readout for the project to share, document, and answer any questions about the user experience research that had been conducted.
Outcome
The UX research and findings led to the successful hand-off of Phase 1 for this project into Phase 2 where development could begin to build out the intranet for the Energy Company.
